When thinking about accountants, typically the only “power tools” that come to mind are adding machines, calculators, and computers. Not so for the team at Dunning & Associates CPAs who donned tool belts and handled nail guns during a recent team building event.
As a firm who has always believed in giving back to the community and has been actively doing so over the years, we decided to partner with Habitat for Humanity this year and get our team out of the office and their comfort zone by using our hands to make something for the benefit of others.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Through home construction and neighborhood revitalization projects, Habitat for Humanity fosters strong and stable communities by providing families with safe and affordable housing. Homeowners build up “sweat equity” by working alongside volunteers.
This hands-on experience was not only rewarding but a lot of fun, as seeing accountants handling power tools is as humorous as you would imagine. Partner and CPA, Jim Wurbs, soon became known as “Builder Bob” as he expertly wielded a nail gun and other tools to help build walls.
Habitat for Humanity promotes the idea that every Habitat house changes lives: those of the families receiving the shelter and those who offer up a hand to help build them. This meaningful experience provided us with a true appreciation for all that builders do and reinforced for us the power of giving back.

The combination of running a business and your life and preparing for tax time can drive some people into a slight panic. But no need to get stressed if you are prepared. Now is the time to start organizing all documents required to file your tax return.
Like the old paraphrased saying goes: In this world, two things are certain—death and taxes. The recent federal tax overhaul changed a lot of rules, so it’s as important as ever to understand your tax obligations, including those on Social Security benefits.
As we close in on another year, we want to take the time to thank each and every one of our clients for your loyalty to not only our firm, but to our team of unique individuals. We like to believe that we are all more than just advisors and clients, but friends...some might even say family. So, from our crew to yours, we wish you and your entire staff and family a very healthy, safe and prosperous holiday season.
